Adding a sprayer to your kitchen sink is a great way to give you options when washing but keep you from having to replace the entire faucet. If you are looking to add a sprayer to your kitchen sink, here are a few materials and simple steps to help guide you in the process.
Tools and Materials Needed
■Pipe wrench
■Adjustable wrench
■Safety goggles
■Rubber gloves
■Pliers
■Screwdriver
■1/8 inch brass nipple - about 5 inches
■Counterweight coupling
■Hose
■1/8 inch brass coupling
■1/8 inch brass elbow
■Towel
■Plumbers tape
■Pipe dope
■Paint brush
Step 1 - Prepare the Area
First, check to make sure that you have a hole near your faucet or around the sink. Typically there will be something covering this hole since it isn't in use. Then, use the valves under the sink to shut off the water. You will have extra water that has built up, so make sure that this drains completely before you move on to the next step and use a towel to dry off the area.
Step 2 - Install Flange
Basically, the flange is the part of the sprayer that keeps water from leaking and holds the sprayer in place when you are not using it. Place the flange on top of the hole and screw it in from underneath. You may need a partner to help you tighten, use pliers to make sure it is secure.
Step 3 - Install and Tighten Fittings
Begin by unscrewing the ends of the pipe in place. You can either take off the top using pliers, or go from underneath and remove it that way. On one of the ends of the new pipe, screw on universal coupling. Attach the U joint to the other end. make sure that everything is tight and secure. You can use a wrench after you have tighten with your hands. Make sure to put the U-joint in place so that it faces the side of the sink.
Step 4 -Install Hose
Insert the hose through the hole from the top of the sink. Then, wrap the end with tape and screw the hose to the U shaped joint. In clockwise direction, make sure to completely secure and tighten the hose on to prevent any future leaks. If the sprayer is not already attached to the hose, you will need to secure it to the end of the top hose. Then, use a counterweight and attach to the bottom of the hose underneath the sink. This will help to keep the hose down and pulled back from the sink.
Step 5 - Check Your Work
Once you are finished you can turn the water supply back on with the valves. Use caution when testing and take note of any leaks that occur. Use a wrench or pliers to adjust or tighten any problems. Adding more paint dope with the brush can help to seal them off.
For the next week or so, keep an eye out to make sure that everything is functioning the right way. A wrench, pliers or paint dope can help to fix most problems that arise.
